Halloween Fairies

A few years ago I watched a video about Halloween decorating.  The creator was a Parisien lady who was decorating her apartment with dried roses and embroidered spider webs.  She said “I have never understood scary Halloween decorations – blood and gore – and sometimes it’s up for a month.  Why would I spend good money to make my home look less beautiful?”

I chuckled at the time, surrounded by menacing looking jack-o-lanterns and sat beside a 5ft skeleton, and announced that beauty was in the eye of the beholder 😆  But it did strike a chord.  I love Halloween but I like a spooky, witchy, magical Halloween, and like the Parisien vlogger, a scarefest at home has never appealed to me.  We all like different things but Halloween or not, I want my house to be calm and cosy.

This year we’ve fully embraced pretty Halloween in our newly painted living room.  Having finally found the perfect creamy yellow, I’ve decorated it with dried roses, hydrangeas and teasel, glass pumpkins, corkscrew hazel and pampas grass.  It looked beautiful – like an Autumnal fairytale – but it was still missing that last touch to make it Halloweeny.

Why would I spend good money to make my home look less beautiful?

So Dorothy and I leaned in to the fairytale element and made these Halloween fairies.  I love them on our mantle, window sills ans chandelier but they’d look equally good on a tablescape or attached to a wreath or garland.

You will need

Small skeletons (ours were strung together on a garland)

Butterflies (you can get these from most craft shops or even pound shops)

Hot glue gun

Scissors

Method

  • Snip off any antenna
  • Fold the wings back one at a time, creating a flat strip in the middle
  • Use that flat strip to attach the wings to the spine of the skeleton with hot glue

If you want the fairies to be extra special you could make the wings from dried flowers, stiffened lace or skeleton leaves.
