We’re hosting a Witch’s Tea Party this weekend and so we needed some proper Halloween party table settings!
It’s been such a long time since we’ve had people round, so we decided to start small with just a handful children, some spooky crafts, and a bit of afternoon tea. If all goes well, maybe next year it’ll be the whole class… and the year after that, the whole street, with a big marquee in the garden and me cackling over a cauldron of pumpkin soup!
For now though, we’re keeping things small, intential, simple. Dorothy was very clear however, that simplicity aside, we needed a properly decorated table, complete with place settings. So it was Halloween craft time and out came the egg cartons I’d been saving “for something,”.
These little witch hat place settings are so simple and so effective. They look brilliant on the table and are a lovely way to get the children involved.
You will need:
An egg carton
Black paint
Plain card
Pens
Glue (we used a glue gun)
Scissors
A bit of trim, ribbon, or sparkle
How to make them:
- Cut the pointy bits out of the egg cartons. Youll need one for each guest

- Draw around a glass on the lid to make a circle (that’s your brim) and cut one out per hat. You may need to use a little extra card from somewhere else
- Glue the pointy bit to the circle to make your hat and allow to dry

- Paint everything black! (Bonus points if you don’t also paint the table, your fingers, and the cat! We found it was best to paint the flat bottom first, let it dry and come back to paint the rest

- Add trims, ribbons, or a touch of glitter until they look suitably witchy.
- Write your guests’ names on little bits of card
- Cut a small slit in the top of each hat and slide the name card in. Or, if you’re short on time, just write the names straight onto the brim with a metallic pen
- Leave it all to dry — have a cuppa and admire your handiwork
And there you have it! A table full of spooky little hats and very proud young lady who made them. I think Dottie did an amazing job.

You could turn these little hats into party favours by popping a few sweets inside each one – a nice surprise for your guests and an excellent excuse to buy “just a few extra” treats.
Here’s to a weekend of wands, witch hats, and tea served with a little touch of magic.
Love Rachel 🎃
